John David McAfee (September 18, 1945 – June 23, 2021) was a British‑American programmer and businessman best known for founding the McAfee antivirus software company. He later became a public figure for his outspoken views on privacy, personal freedom, and technology, as well as his controversial lifestyle and legal issues. McAfee ran for the U.S. presidency as a Libertarian Party candidate in 2016 and again in 2020.

After leaving McAfee Inc., he lived in Belize for several years, engaging in various business ventures and controversies. In Belize, he faced law enforcement scrutiny, including a police search of his property in 2012 in connection with unlicensed drug manufacturing and weapons possession, and he was reportedly a person of interest in the 2012 death of neighbor Gregory Faull, though he was never charged. McAfee fled Belize rather than cooperate with investigators.

McAfee later relocated internationally. In August 2020, he was arrested in Spain at the request of the United States Department of Justice on charges of tax evasion and failing to file U.S. federal tax returns for several years. He also faced actions by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleging fraudulent conduct related to cryptocurrency promotional activities.

On June 23, 2021, McAfee was found dead in his prison cell near Barcelona, Spain, hours after a Spanish court authorized his extradition to the United States on tax charges. The Catalan Justice Department reported that the death was due to apparent suicide by hanging, and an official autopsy confirmed this. McAfee had previously posted on social media in 2019 and 2020 that if he were ever found dead by hanging, it would not be by his own choice, which contributed to speculation after his death.

After his death, conspiracy theories circulated online claiming McAfee was murdered or was still alive. Some theories gained attention on social platforms and were linked to fringe movements, but there is no credible evidence to support such claims. Videos shared on social media purporting to show new footage of McAfee are either old recordings or unverified content; fact‑checking organizations have confirmed that no reliable evidence shows he is alive.

McAfee occasionally made public comments criticizing political figures, including both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, primarily about their positions on cybersecurity and government surveillance. There is no verified record that any specific video in recent years showed McAfee making widely circulated claims implicating Hillary Clinton in wrongdoing. Content circulating online that ties McAfee to broader conspiracy theories about prominent political figures lacks substantiation from reputable sources.

McAfee’s life, marked by early success in software, later legal troubles, international flight, and dramatic public statements, continues to be the subject of documentaries, news accounts, and public commentary.
