Head of Sweden’s UNHCR fundraising agency Joanna Rubinstein resigns after Epstein file revelations

On February 7, 2026, Joanna Rubinstein stepped down from her role as chair of Sweden for UNHCR, a fundraising affiliate of the United Nations Refugee Agency, following the release of documents in the Jeffrey Epstein files that showed she visited Epstein’s private Caribbean island in 2012. Rubinstein had served in leadership roles in international nonprofits focused on child protection and development.

The disclosed documents included travel records and emails indicating the visit occurred several years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution. In response to the disclosures, Sweden for UNHCR said the organization was not previously aware of the trip. Rubinstein confirmed meeting Epstein on one occasion but denied any further contact.

Rubinstein’s resignation drew attention amid broader scrutiny of Epstein’s network and associations with high-profile figures globally. The Epstein file releases have also been linked to resignations and heightened examination of leaders, diplomats, and public officials in several countries.
