Estonia's governing coalition lost its parliamentary majority on August 10, 2026, after two members of parliament left parties belonging to the government. The defections reduced the coalition led by Prime Minister Kristen Michal to 50 seats in Estonia's 101-seat parliament.
Kalev Stoicescu left the Estonia 200 party on August 9, while Meelis Kiili announced on August 10 that he had left the Reform Party. Their departures left the governing coalition one seat below the threshold required for a parliamentary majority.
The loss of a majority does not automatically remove the government from office. The administration can continue governing but may require support from opposition or independent legislators to approve legislation, budgets, and other measures requiring parliamentary votes.
Estonia is a member of the European Union and NATO and shares a border with Russia. Parliamentary elections are required by March 2027, making the change in parliamentary arithmetic relevant to government stability during the period preceding the election.
