Taiwan deliberately reduced mobile internet speeds across a large part of central Taiwan on August 10, 2026, as part of its annual Han Kuang military exercises. The test was designed to simulate communications disruption caused by a military attack or major emergency.
During the exercise, basic mobile telephone services remained available while data capacity was restricted. Fixed internet connections, landlines, traffic signals, and automated teller machines continued operating. Air raid sirens were also activated and residents received emergency alerts describing simulated attacks on communications infrastructure.
Taiwanese forces simultaneously conducted military exercises on the Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait. Tanks, artillery, anti-aircraft weapons, regular troops, and reservists participated in a simulated defense against an amphibious landing.
The exercise forms part of Taiwan's continuing preparations for possible military action by China. Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and has not renounced the use of force, while Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claim.
