U.S. Congressman Brian Mast wears Israeli military uniform in Congress

U.S. Representative Brian Mast, a Republican from Florida and chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, drew attention on Capitol Hill when he appeared in an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military uniform inside the U.S. Capitol. The incident took place on October 13, 2023, during a Republican conference meeting in Congress.

Mast, a combat veteran who lost both legs serving in the United States Army, has also volunteered in support roles with the Israeli military. In January 2015, he participated in a civilian volunteer program with the IDF that involved packing medical kits and moving supplies at a base outside Tel Aviv, but he did not serve as a regular combat soldier in the Israeli armed forces.

The uniform appearance was intended by Mast as a political statement of support for Israel, especially following the October 7 attacks by Hamas. He later explained on social media that he wore the uniform in response to criticism from Democratic members of Congress and to show solidarity with Israel, saying he had “served with both the United States Army and the Israel Defense Forces” and would always stand with Israel.

The stunt sparked reactions across the political spectrum. Some supporters praised his show of support for a key U.S. ally, while critics called the act unusual or inappropriate for an American legislator to wear the uniform of a foreign military inside the House chambers. Debates also emerged over the symbolism and propriety of the uniform in a national legislative context.

Mast’s broader political focus includes strong advocacy for Israel in U.S. foreign policy and leadership on committees overseeing international relations, making his appearance in IDF attire part of his larger public profile on Middle East issues in Congress.
