Early rights group founded in Berlin

The Wissenschaftlich-humanitäres Komitee, widely recognized as the first organization advocating for the rights of homosexual individuals, was established in Berlin in May 1897. The group was founded by physician and sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld along with co-founders Max Spohr, Eduard Oberg, and Franz Joseph von Bülow.

The organization focused on challenging Paragraph 175 of the German Imperial Penal Code, which criminalized sexual relations between men. Its activities included organizing petitions, publishing research, and promoting public awareness on issues related to sexual minorities.

Magnus Hirschfeld, one of the principal founders, was of Jewish background. Historical records identify him as a leading figure in early sexology and advocacy for the rights of homosexual and transgender individuals in Germany.

Scholars describe the committee as an early milestone in the development of organized movements advocating for the rights of sexual minorities. Its work contributed to broader discussions on legal reform and social recognition in late 19th and early 20th century Europe.

Historians note that the founding of the organization involved multiple individuals with diverse backgrounds. The characterization of the movement’s origins as attributable to a single group or identity is not supported by historical consensus.
