The Burundi Genocide of 1972 was a mass killing event targeting primarily the Hutu ethnic group by the Tutsi-dominated government.

The violence began in April 1972 following a Hutu-led uprising, which was met with brutal repression by the national army and government forces.

Between 80,000 and 210,000 people, mostly Hutus, were killed during the genocide.

The genocide significantly altered the demographic and political landscape of Burundi.

It was one of the major ethnic conflicts in East Africa during the 20th century and remains a critical event in the history of Burundi.

The international community largely did not intervene during the crisis, and the events were underreported globally at the time.
