U.S. President Donald Trump posted a series of messages on his Truth Social platform in which he shared private texts from French President Emmanuel Macron and the NATO Secretary‑General regarding tensions over Greenland. In the messages, Macron reportedly told Trump he did not understand his actions on Greenland and proposed coordinating a G7 meeting in Paris. The NATO chief expressed support for finding a way forward on Greenland. Trump also posted edited images depicting himself occupying Greenland, Canada and Venezuela as part of his controversy over Arctic policy.
The posts came as Trump continued to pressure Western allies over their stance on Greenland, including prior threats to impose tariffs on several European countries unless they agreed to U.S. aims in the region. He also criticized Britain’s recent concession of the Chagos Islands as a sign of weakness. The social posts were made on the eve of a key diplomatic week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump’s remarks have strained relations with NATO partners and raised concerns about U.S. foreign policy.
Later Tuesday morning, Trump also shared a message on Truth Social from NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte, who apparently tried to signal a desire for a diplomatic solution on Greenland. In the message, Rutte wrote: "Mr. President, dead Donald - what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine. I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can't wait to see you. Yours, Mark." Rutte is known as one of the European officials best able to maintain relatively good relations with Trump and speak to him effectively. Trump shared Rutte’s message with the caption: “Thank you, Mark Rutte, Secretary‑General of NATO!”
