Herman Rosenblat publicly acknowledged in December 2008 that key elements of his Holocaust survival story were fabricated. Rosenblat had claimed that while imprisoned at the Schlieben subcamp of Buchenwald he met a girl who threw him apples over the camp fence, a person he later said became his wife. Journalistic investigation and historical review found that the camp layout and conditions made the account impossible. Following the admission, the publisher canceled the planned memoir Angel at the Fence, and media appearances and related projects based on the story were withdrawn.
