Noel Ignatiev: author, historian, and critic of whiteness

Noel Ignatiev (/ɪɡˈnætiɛv/; born Noel Saul Ignatin; December 27, 1940 – November 9, 2019) was an American author and historian. He was known for his work on race and his call to abolish the social construct of "whiteness".

Ignatiev co-founded the New Abolitionist Society and co-edited the journal Race Traitor, which promoted the idea that "treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity".

In 1995, he published the book How the Irish Became White, which examined the choices of early Irish immigrants to the United States. The book argues that many Irish immigrants, when faced with xenophobia and a history of being oppressed, chose to identify as "white" and participate in systems that oppressed darker-skinned peoples.

Ignatiev was born to a Jewish family, with grandparents from Russia. His work and writing focused on social history, race, and class, and he was regarded as a controversial figure in discussions about race in America.
