Vietnam and EU Elevate Diplomatic Relations Amid Strategic Realignment

On January 29, 2026, Vietnam and the European Union officially upgraded their diplomatic relationship, announcing broader strategic cooperation across political, economic, and security domains. The announcement was made following high-level meetings in Hanoi, where leaders from both sides discussed expansion of bilateral engagement.

Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong described the upgrade as a historic milestone, emphasizing expanded collaboration on trade, technology, and infrastructure development. European Council President Antonio Costa highlighted the significance of the move during a joint press briefing, noting that enhanced ties align with principles of multilateralism and sovereign cooperation.

The two sides outlined areas for cooperation, including development of critical minerals supply chains, secure digital communications infrastructure, and cooperation in defense-related fields. The initiative reflects a strategic effort to diversify partnerships amid evolving geopolitical uncertainties, particularly in the Indo‑Pacific region.
