African Union Becomes Permanent Member of G20, Expanding Voice of Global South

The African Union was formally admitted as a permanent member of the Group of Twenty (G20) during the leaders’ summit in New Delhi, marking the first expansion of the bloc’s membership since its creation.

The move granted the African Union, which represents 55 countries, a seat alongside major global economies including the United States, China, the European Union, and India. Prior to the decision, the African continent was represented in the G20 only through South Africa.

G20 leaders said the inclusion was intended to strengthen the representation of developing nations in global economic governance, particularly on issues related to debt relief, development financing, climate change, and trade.

The African Union stated that permanent membership would allow the continent to participate more directly in shaping international economic policies that affect emerging and low-income economies. Officials highlighted the importance of addressing global financial inequality and reforming international lending institutions.

The decision came amid growing calls from developing countries for greater influence in multilateral institutions, as global economic challenges continue to disproportionately affect the Global South.
