Justice Department faces criticism and redaction controversy over Epstein files
In late January and early February 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice came under criticism for the handling and redaction of newly released Jeffrey Epstein files. Critics, including lawmakers and victim advocates, argued that not all relevant documents were released and that extensive redactions limited transparency.
Republican and Democratic members of Congress expressed skepticism about the Justice Department’s claim to have fully complied with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Some lawmakers stated that only about half of the potentially responsive documents were released, and that key materials might remain withheld.
Groups representing Epstein victims criticized the release for exposing sensitive information about survivors while not sufficiently disclosing files that could reveal involvement of powerful individuals. Public opinion polls showed a majority of Americans remained dissatisfied with the handling of the file releases.
