On July 16, 2014, during the Gaza conflict between Israel and Hamas, four Palestinian children from the Bakr family were killed in a strike near the fishing harbor of Gaza City.
The children were identified as Ismail Mahmoud Bakr, 9, Ahed Atef Bakr, 10, Zakaria Ahed Bakr, 10, and Mohammed Ramez Bakr, 11. All four were cousins and part of a local fishing family.
According to witnesses and journalists staying at a nearby hotel, the boys were playing on the beach near fishermen’s huts when two explosive rounds struck the area. The first explosion hit a structure near the harbor, and a second strike occurred moments later as the children attempted to flee.
Several other individuals were injured in the incident and were taken to nearby medical facilities. The strike occurred during the early phase of the 2014 Gaza war.
The Israeli military stated that the attack targeted what it described as a Hamas naval compound and said the civilian deaths were an unintended result of the strike.
The incident was widely documented by international journalists present in the area at the time and later became the subject of investigations and legal appeals related to the conduct of the military operation.
