The Siege of Masada was the last stronghold of the Jewish rebels during the First Jewish–Roman War. Roman forces laid siege to the fortress located on a plateau near the Dead Sea after a lengthy campaign.
Despite the Roman cohorts constructing a massive ramp to breach the walls, the Jewish defenders chose mass suicide over capture. This act has become a symbol of resistance and martyrdom.
Archaeological remains at Masada continue to offer insights into this dramatic event and its place in Jewish history.
