Caligula, the third Roman emperor, was assassinated by members of the Praetorian Guard on January 24th. His reign was marked by controversy, extravagance, and reported acts of cruelty, which culminated in a conspiracy against him.

The assassination took place in the imperial palace on the Palatine Hill, where he was stabbed multiple times by guards led by Cassius Chaerea. His death ended a turbulent period in Roman imperial history and led to the ascension of Claudius as the next emperor.
