In the mid-first century, Emperor Nero initiated systematic persecution of Christians in Rome following the Great Fire of 64 AD. Christians were blamed for the disaster and subjected to brutal punishments.
This persecution marked one of the earliest large-scale attempts by a Roman authority to suppress Christianity through arrests, torture, and executions. Many Christians were crucified, burned alive, or killed in arenas.
The events under Nero set a precedent for future Roman attitudes toward Christians, contributing to their marginalization within the empire for decades. Despite the oppression, the Christian faith continued to grow underground.
