Following the assassination of Emperor Caracalla, Macrinus, then the commander of the Praetorian Guard, declared himself emperor. His accession marked the first time a Roman emperor came from the equestrian class rather than the senatorial class.

Macrinus initially sought to stabilize the empire and reverse some of Caracalla's policies, but his reign faced significant challenges including military opposition and political unrest. Despite attempts at reform, his rule was short-lived, lasting just over a year before he was overthrown.
