Ukraine carried out a drone attack on Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region on August 10, 2026. Ukrainian military authorities said the operation targeted the TANECO oil refinery, while Russian authorities reported that residential and industrial areas were also struck.
Russian officials reported that at least 13 people were killed, including a child, and dozens were injured. Seven Uzbek citizens and a Tajik citizen were among those reported killed. Russian investigators opened a criminal investigation following the attack.
Ukraine confirmed that its forces had targeted the TANECO refinery and reported a fire at the facility. Video footage reviewed by Reuters showed smoke rising from the refinery area. The full extent of damage to the facility was not immediately established.
The TANECO refinery is operated by Tatneft and processed approximately 17 million metric tons of crude oil in 2024. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian refineries and other energy facilities as part of an effort to reduce fuel production and economic resources supporting Russia's military operations.
Russia accused Ukraine of deliberately attacking civilians. Ukraine and Russia both state that they do not intentionally target civilian populations, although civilians have been killed in attacks conducted by both sides during the war.
