Vlad III Dracula, Prince of Wallachia
Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula, was born in 1431 in Transylvania, part of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. He became Voivode (Prince) of Wallachia, a principality in present-day Romania, and ruled intermittently between 1448 and 1476.
Vlad is most famous for his harsh methods of punishing enemies, particularly impalement, which earned him the nickname "the Impaler." He fought against the Ottoman Empire to defend Wallachian independence and maintained strict control over his territories. Historical records report that he executed tens of thousands of people, including rival nobles and captured Ottoman soldiers.
His father, Vlad II Dracul, was a member of the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order dedicated to fighting the Ottoman Turks. Vlad III's reputation for cruelty spread throughout Europe during his lifetime. After his death in 1476 or 1477, stories about his life and deeds grew into the legends that inspired Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel "Dracula."
Contemporary chronicles, including Saxon and Hungarian sources, confirm Vlad's campaigns of terror were real, but many supernatural elements in the later Dracula myth are fictional. The historical Vlad III played a complex role as both a national defender and a feared ruler known for extreme punishment.
