Ofek Buchris Pleads Guilty To Sexual Offenses In Israeli Military Court

On January 17, 2017, Brigadier General (res.) **Ofek Buchris**, a former officer in the Israel Defense Forces, admitted to sexual offenses during a sentencing hearing at the Jaffa Military Court. The plea deal followed his earlier conviction by military prosecutors and replaced more serious charges, including three counts of rape, with the charge of prohibited sexual relations by consent. Buchris also confessed in a public letter to unspecified sexual offenses and a prohibited sexual liaison.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Buchris was **demoted to lieutenant colonel** and received a **suspended sentence** rather than imprisonment. The judge required him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to assess whether he posed a threat to society. The two women who brought accusations against Buchris were required to approve the plea deal, with one insisting that Buchris take responsibility and clarify that the relationships were not consensual romantic engagements.

Prior to agreeing to the plea deal, Buchris had **denied all charges**, including rape and sexual assault. During the hearing, he stated, “I take full responsibility for my actions,” signaling his acceptance of the reduced charges. Military officers who had served with him reportedly praised his character during the hearing, despite the convictions.

The sentencing decision was delayed for further review by the judges, while the legal proceedings highlighted the complexities of addressing sexual offenses involving high-ranking military personnel in Israel.
