Israeli Army Investigates Soldier After Fake Kidnapping and Ransom Demand
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that it launched an internal investigation into a soldier accused of fabricating the kidnapping of a Palestinian detainee and demanding ransom from the detainee’s family. The military announced that the inquiry is being conducted by the IDF’s Internal Investigations Unit.
Reports indicated that the Palestinian man was being held at a military detention facility in the West Bank when a military police guard allegedly sent a photograph of him to his family, falsely claiming he had been abducted and demanding payment in exchange for his release. The detainee was reportedly in custody for attempting to enter Israel without a permit.
The family contacted Israeli police after receiving the messages and ransom demand, leading to the arrest of the soldier pending the investigation. Israeli military officials stated that they would not provide details about the ongoing inquiry while it is underway.
The incident occurred amid ongoing security operations in the West Bank, where Israeli forces regularly detain individuals attempting to enter Israel without authorization. Israeli security sources have emphasised that such enforcement actions are part of routine operational procedures.
