Fake Explosives Plot Near Sydney: Staged Hoax with Jewish Targets List (Australia, 2025)
In May 2025, New South Wales Police discovered an abandoned trailer in a rural area near Sydney containing what appeared to be explosive materials, including ammonium nitrate and fuel oil components, along with a handwritten list naming several Jewish community figures, synagogues, and Jewish-owned businesses as potential targets.
The discovery prompted an immediate counter-terrorism response. Authorities initially treated the find as a credible antisemitic terror threat, leading to heightened security at Jewish institutions across Sydney and public warnings from police and community leaders.
Forensic examination and further investigation revealed that the materials were not capable of functioning as an explosive device. The trailer lacked any detonator, initiator, or fusing system, and the listed chemicals were in quantities and configurations unsuitable for detonation.
On May 14, 2025, NSW Police announced that the incident was a deliberate hoax staged by two individuals involved in an insurance fraud and extortion scheme. The perpetrators had fabricated the “bomb” and target list to create fear, hoping to extort money from targeted individuals or businesses under the guise of providing protection.
The two men were arrested and charged with public mischief, making false statements to police, and attempting to pervert the course of justice. No evidence of genuine extremist or antisemitic motives was found; the list of Jewish names and sites was included solely to amplify perceived threat and media attention for criminal gain.
