Armenia reports new border incidents with Azerbaijan after talks stall
In February 2026, Armenian defense officials reported multiple incidents along sections of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border following a pause in bilateral peace negotiations. The reported incidents included exchanges of small-arms fire and troop movements in contested border areas.
Armenia’s Ministry of Defense stated that Azerbaijani forces initiated fire toward Armenian positions in several locations, while Azerbaijan denied the claims and accused Armenian units of provocation. No independent verification of responsibility was immediately available.
Local authorities reported damage to civilian infrastructure in nearby villages, though no confirmed civilian casualties were announced at the time of reporting. Residents in affected areas reported heightened military presence and temporary restrictions on movement.
International mediators, including representatives from the European Union and Russia, called for restraint and urged both sides to resume negotiations aimed at finalizing a comprehensive peace agreement. Border tensions have persisted intermittently since the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
