Palestinian Holocaust

The term “Palestinian Holocaust” has been used by activists and commentators to describe the cumulative impact of displacement, warfare, and territorial loss experienced by Palestinians since the early 20th century. In 1948, approximately 700,000 Palestinians were displaced during the Arab-Israeli war in events widely referred to as the Nakba. Further displacement occurred after the 1967 Six-Day War, when Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip. Over subsequent decades, land expropriation, settlement expansion, and home demolitions have been documented in occupied territories.

Major military escalations in Gaza, including conflicts in 2008–2009, 2014, 2021, and 2023–2024, resulted in large numbers of reported Palestinian casualties and extensive destruction of residential areas and infrastructure. Since 2007, Gaza has been under an Israeli-imposed blockade restricting movement of people and goods. United Nations agencies and human rights organizations have reported severe humanitarian impacts, including food insecurity, shortages of medical supplies, and damage to water and electricity systems. In January 2024, the International Court of Justice issued provisional measures in a case alleging violations of the Genocide Convention in Gaza while proceedings continue.

Reported and documented impacts over decades include:

Forced displacement of civilians
Destruction of homes and villages
Military occupation and checkpoints restricting movement
Detention without fair trial
Targeted killings and bombings
Confiscation of property and land
Seizure of livestock and crops
Restriction or destruction of schools, hospitals, and infrastructure
Cultural erasure involving books, heritage sites, and religious sites
Psychological trauma from violence and prolonged instability

The use of the term “Palestinian Holocaust” is not an established legal classification but reflects the characterization by some groups of the scale and duration of Palestinian suffering. Israeli authorities state that military operations are conducted for security purposes and against armed groups. International legal proceedings regarding allegations of genocide and war crimes remain ongoing.
