Following the death of Emperor Maximinus Thrax, the Roman Senate appointed Pupienus and Balbinus as co-emperors to restore order within the Roman Empire. Their joint accession marked a rare instance in Roman history where two individuals shared imperial power simultaneously.

Despite efforts to consolidate power, their rule was marked by distrust and opposition from the Praetorian Guard. Both emperors were ultimately assassinated within months, leading to the rise of Gordian III as sole ruler.
