🔎 Investigate this EventDate: 2001-01-25
Yitzhak “Itzik” Mordechai was a senior Israeli military and political figure, serving as a Major General in the Israel Defense Forces and later as Minister of Defense, Minister of Transport, and Deputy Prime Minister during the 1990s.
In January 2001, an Israeli court convicted Mordechai on two counts of sexual assault and sexual harassment. The offenses involved multiple women, including former military subordinates and civilians, and occurred during different periods of his public service.
The court sentenced Mordechai to an 18-month suspended prison sentence and probation. Following the conviction, he resigned from the Knesset and withdrew from political life.
The case was significant within Israel as it marked one of the first times a senior political and military leader was convicted under Israel’s sexual misconduct laws, contributing to increased public scrutiny of abuse of power and accountability among high-ranking officials.
