Israel’s ambassador to Canada, Iddo Moed, called on the Canadian government to implement significant changes in its approach to antisemitism during remarks made in March 2026. The comments were delivered during a virtual panel discussion addressing rising hate incidents in the country.

Moed stated that addressing current threats may require reconsidering certain freedoms, saying it can be difficult for liberal societies to accept limiting freedoms in order to protect others. He indicated that, in his view, existing measures are insufficient to address the scale of the issue.

The ambassador linked recent incidents to what he described as foreign-backed threats, specifically naming Iran as a source of influence. He stated that such actors are exploiting democratic systems and freedoms to carry out or support hostile activities.

Moed also referenced public demonstrations, including al-Quds Day events, describing them as expressions that should be scrutinized more closely. He suggested that some protests go beyond protected speech and function as efforts to delegitimize Israel.

The remarks were made amid reports of increased antisemitic incidents in Canada, including shootings targeting synagogues in the Toronto area. Canadian authorities have been investigating these incidents, though details of responsibility have not been fully confirmed.

Canadian officials have acknowledged concerns about rising hate crimes and are considering legislative responses. Discussions have included proposals such as Bill C-9, which aims to introduce new offenses related to obstructing access to religious or cultural institutions.
