Ukraine's military intelligence reported on August 5, 2026, that North Korea had deployed a missile unit to Russia's Voronezh region to support Russian military operations against Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian assessment, approximately 90 North Korean personnel were associated with the deployment.

The unit was reported to be connected with North Korean ballistic missile systems already supplied to Russia. Ukrainian intelligence estimated that the deployment could involve up to six launchers and approximately 120 missiles, although the full quantity and operational status had not been independently confirmed.

Russia has previously used North Korean KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles against targets in Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities have recovered and examined debris from these weapons following earlier attacks. North Korea has also supplied Russia with artillery ammunition and other military equipment during the war.

The missile deployment represents an expansion of North Korea's direct involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. North Korean troops had previously been deployed to Russia's Kursk region, where they participated alongside Russian forces following Ukraine's 2024 incursion into Russian territory.

Russia and North Korea expanded their military relationship after Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un signed a strategic partnership agreement in June 2024 containing provisions for mutual assistance. The deployment gives North Korean personnel additional operational experience with ballistic missile systems while providing Russia with additional weapons and personnel for its continuing military campaign.
