Palestinian Teen in Viral Image Charged Following Arrest in Hebron
Israeli authorities charged 16-year-old Palestinian Fawzi al-Junaidi after his arrest in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron. Al-Junaidi became widely known after images showing him blindfolded and surrounded by Israeli soldiers circulated internationally.
According to Israeli prosecutors, al-Junaidi was accused of throwing stones and participating in a protest. The charges followed demonstrations that took place after the United States announced its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital earlier that month.
Al-Junaidi denied the accusations and stated that he was not involved in the protest. He said he was walking home when he was detained and alleged that he was beaten during and after his arrest, resulting in injuries that required medical treatment.
Al-Junaidi, who is visually impaired, told media outlets that he was punched, kicked, and threatened while in custody. His family and legal representatives said he was held for several days before appearing in a military court.
The Israeli military stated at the time that its forces were responding to violent disturbances and denied allegations of mistreatment. Human rights organisations cited the case as part of broader concerns regarding the detention and prosecution of Palestinian minors in military courts.
