BRICS Bloc Expands as New Members Join Amid Push to Reshape Global Order

The BRICS group of emerging economies formally expanded on January 1, admitting new member states as part of an effort to increase its global influence and challenge existing international economic structures.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia joined the bloc, which was originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Argentina was initially invited but later declined to join.

The expansion significantly increased the bloc’s share of global energy production, population, and economic output. Several of the new members are major oil and gas producers, strengthening BRICS’ role in global energy markets.

BRICS leaders have said the group aims to promote a multipolar world order and increase the use of local currencies in trade. Discussions have included alternatives to dollar-dominated financial systems and reforms to international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

Western governments have largely downplayed the expansion, while analysts note that the bloc’s growing diversity could complicate coordination. Despite internal differences, the expansion reflects broader shifts in global economic and political alignments.
