George Floyd was a 46-year-old Black American man who died on May 25, 2020, during an arrest by Minneapolis police officers after a store clerk reported that he may have used a counterfeit $20 bill to purchase cigarettes. ([turn0search0], [turn0search1])

Minneapolis police officers responded to the report and removed Floyd from a vehicle. During the encounter, former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for approximately nine minutes and 29 seconds while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down in the street. Three other officers — J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao — assisted in restraining Floyd or prevented bystanders from intervening. Floyd repeatedly communicated that he could not breathe, and bystanders pleaded with officers to show mercy. ([turn0search0], [turn0search32], [turn0search34])

Floyd became unresponsive during the restraint. Emergency medical technicians arrived and transported him to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Two autopsy reports determined his death to be a homicide, with the official Hennepin County medical examiner concluding that cardiopulmonary arrest during law enforcement restraint and neck compression was the cause of death. A separate autopsy commissioned by Floyd’s family found that mechanical asphyxia was consistent with the injuries. ([turn0search3], [turn0search32])

Footage of the restraint and Floyd’s death, including bystander video, was widely circulated online and broadcast by international media, bringing immediate and extensive public attention to the incident. The phrase “I can’t breathe,” which Floyd said multiple times during the encounter, became a focal expression in protests. ([turn0search30])

The killing of George Floyd sparked widespread protests across the United States and internationally. Demonstrations took place in more than 2,000 cities and towns, with many focusing on police brutality, systemic racism and demands for reform of law enforcement practices. Protests were held despite restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. ([turn0search0])

Derek Chauvin was arrested on May 29, 2020, and charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. On April 20, 2021, he was found guilty on all charges by a Minnesota jury and later sentenced to 22½ years in state prison. Chauvin also pleaded guilty to federal charges of violating Floyd’s civil rights. ([turn0search2], [turn0search32])

The three other officers involved were also charged. Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to state charges of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter and received concurrent sentences; Kueng and Lane also faced federal civil rights convictions. Tou Thao was found guilty of aiding and abetting manslaughter and received a prison sentence. All four officers were fired from the Minneapolis Police Department the day after Floyd’s death. ([turn0search32], [turn0search34])

In March 2021, the city of Minneapolis agreed to a wrongful death settlement of US$27 million with Floyd’s family, one of the largest settlements in a police killing case in U.S. history. The settlement accompanied ongoing discussions about policing reforms and civil rights enforcement. ([turn0search32])

Floyd’s death and the resulting movement contributed to legislative, corporate and civic debates over police practices, use-of-force policies, racial equity and systemic discrimination in the United States, although major nationwide policing reforms remained limited. His name has been memorialized in cultural works, public memorials and ongoing activism. ([turn0search1])
