Caracalla, Roman Emperor and son of Septimius Severus, was assassinated amid a military campaign in Moesia. While traveling through the province, he was murdered by a soldier in his own guard after a brief dispute.
This assassination abruptly ended his reign, leading to the rise of Macrinus as emperor. The killing took place close to the Danube frontier, where Caracalla had been engaged in military operations to secure the Roman borders.
