The Edict on Maximum Prices was promulgated under Emperor Diocletian in an effort to curb rampant inflation throughout the Roman Empire. The edict set maximum prices for over a thousand goods and services, attempting to control costs and stabilize the economy.

This measure reflected growing economic difficulties and currency devaluation during Diocletian’s reign. Despite strict enforcement, the edict faced widespread evasion and was largely unsuccessful in halting inflation.
