On March 31, 1492, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, issued the Alhambra Decree, ordering all Jews in Castile and Aragon to leave by July 31, 1492, unless they converted to Christianity.
The decree restricted Jews from taking most valuables, including gold and silver, though some property could be sold. Authorities monitored transactions to enforce these rules.
Tens of thousands of Jews left Spain and resettled in North Africa, the Ottoman Empire, Italy, and other regions. Some converted to Christianity, becoming conversos. The decree was formally revoked in the 19th century.
Coin-clipping was a historical accusation used to justify such restrictions against Jews
